Buy a Brick at the Pratt Recreation Center

Poignant memorials. Cheerful encouragements. "Frodo Lives!" All these and more are found on the custom engraved paving bricks at the entrance to the Pratt Recreation Center on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. The opportunity to have one's message carved in stone (well, actually, clay) has prompted dozens of expressions, from the serious to the silly.

"In Loving Memory of FDNY Battalion Chief Matthew Ryan 9/11/01," reads one brick. "Strive in an Honest Way to Do the Best You Can," reads another, quoting Charles William Post, the cereal tycoon for whom the C.W. Post Campus is named. There are wishes of good luck for sports teams and the student body at large from alumni, faculty and staff. And then there are the mysteries, like "doug," whose four-letter engraving has achieved lower-cased immortality.

How to Buy a Brick

Standard 4-by-8 inch bricks, which can accommodate three lines of text at 30 characters per line, cost $500 and 8-by-8 bricks, which hold six lines of text, cost $1,000. The proceeds benefit the Pratt Recreation Center building campaign. This facility offers a full fitness center, an eight-lane pool and a 3,000-seat gymnasium for C.W. Post's NCAA indoor sports programs. The Pratt Recreation Center includes the Human Performance Laboratory, smart classrooms for physical education courses, an elevated indoor running track, racquetball courts and the administrative offices of the C.W. Post Athletic Department.

Bricks are still available. For more information, contact Jennifer M. Griesofe, C.W. Post director of development, at (516) 299-4053.
