Targeting Companies by Location and Industry

The following directories will be useful for locating companies by type and by location, both in the local area and across the country.

General Directories:

Hoover's Online. [Library databases] Use Hoover's "Build A List" feature to find companies in any location by industry, size, financial characteristics, type and many other search parameters. Excellent sort features are also available.

D & B Regional Business Directory. Long Island, New York Area. [Bus HG 4057.N7 D86] Find companies in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings counties listed alphabetically, geographically, and by industry classification. Ranked lists by sales size and employee size are also included.

D & B Regional Business Directory. New York Metropolitan Area. [Bus HG4058.N56 D86] Find companies in the five boroughs of New York City listed alphabetically, geographically, and by industry classification. Ranked lists by sales size and employee size are also included.

Business Rankings. [Bus HG4057 .A237] Use this Dun & Bradstreet directory to locate top public and private companies ranked by sales volume and employee size, nationally and by state. Industry rankings are also available.

Career Guide: Dun's Employment Opportunities Directory. [Bus HF 5382.5 .U5 .D86] Find career opportunities by state using the index "Disciplines Hired Geographically."

Directory of American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries. [Bus HG4538.A1 D5] For those looking for off-shore career opportunities, this directory provides an alphabetical and geographical list of companies operating abroad.

In addition to a brief summary of the company, each entry includes information on salaries, benefits, contacts, minority employment, and type of personnel hired. Indexes for specific types of job seekers and opportunities for minorities and women are also provided.

Career Guide: Dun's Employment Opportunities Directory. [Bus HF 5382.5 .U5 .D86] Prospective employer information is provided on 10,000 leading companies. Entries include a brief company profile and a list of the occupations that are hired. Indexes by state and city, industry, branch location, and disciplines hired geographically make this a comprehensive employment guide.

Directory of Executive Recruiters. [Bus HF5549.5 .R44 D58] Executive recruitment firms are a useful tool for locating top positions. This directory provides lists of firms by job function, industry, recruiter specialty, and geographic area.

Associations can be a good source of information about a career field and can provide invaluable networking opportunities. Many professional associations have local chapters.

Occupational Outlook Handbook. [http://www.bls.gov/oco] This comprehensive resource provides detailed profiles with information on working conditions, qualifications, outlook, earnings, related occupations, and sources of additional information for each occupation. Links are also provided to state and local information including long-term and short-term occupational projections.

JobStar. [http://jobstar.org] This is an excellent website that provides much useful information for the job search. See especially the links for resumes, career guides, and salary information, and also the links to California job information.

JobWeb. [http://www.jobweb.com] Owned and sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, this very useful web site for college students and new college graduates, offers excellent employer profiles and job-search advice.


Business:

CareerJournal.com. [http://careerjournal.com] This comprehensive Wall Street Journal website offers salary information, job and career advice, and a database of more than 100,000 available positions. Many career-related articles are also available.

Careers in Business. [http://careers-in-business.com] Use this website for information on accounting, consulting, finance, marketing, and non-profit sector careers.

Careers in Marketing. [http://www.marshall.usc.edu/web/marketing.cfm?doc_id=2890] Marketing career paths and descriptions are provided at this useful website from the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business. Links to many marketing websites are also provided.

Vault. [http://www.vault.com] This website offers insider information on featured companies and industries, advice, and career management services. Vault's Electronic WaterCooler is a collection of company-specific message boards that share news and offer networking opportunities. Although some content is for sale, much free information is available.

U.S. Department of Labor. Bureau of Labor Statistics. [http://www.bls.gov/bls/wages.htm] The BLS provides comprehensive and detailed information on wages, benefits, and compensation trends.
