The American Library Association (ALA) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) affirm that libraries are forums for information and ideas.
They support, defend and promote intellectual freedom as defined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to FAIFE, an initiative within IFLA "Intellectual
freedom is the right of every individual to both hold and express opinions and to seek and receive information. Intellectual freedom is the basis of democracy. Information freedom is the core of the library
concept."
