Bibles and Liturgical Texts
Special Collections is home to an exceptional collection of Bibles and Christian liturgical texts. Styles range from the simplicity of Sacred Scripture in modern-day English prose to a twelve-language polyglot Bible overseen by a 16th-century German Hebrew scholar. Some texts include exegeses, glosses and indices.
Appearing in the same collection are Catholic and Protestant liturgical texts, presenting hymns, prayers and ceremonials for the clergy and faithful to follow.
Taken together, the collection covers nearly four and a half centuries of printing, from the very early 16th to the late 20th centuries. There are such varied languages besides English as Dutch, French, German and Latin. One encounters many font types, from modern-day Roman letters to elegant German Fraktur type and italicized Romantic scripts. Certain texts have been rebound, while others retain their original bindings. The smallest item of 11.5 mm is dwarfed by 37.5-mm folios.
All are available for exhibition and for consultation: by appointment.
