What is WebCT?

WebCT is a course management system that is used by some LIU faculty to communicate with their students online, and extend the course beyond the normal classroom experience. Only the instructor and students in the course have access to the course materials there.

Logging into WebCT 6.0

  1. From Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari (Mac's), enter the following address to get to the WebCT logon page: http://webct.liu.edu
  2. Click the Log In button.
  3. In the User Name box enter your WebCT ID - this is the same as your My LIU account name. (Typically, your username is "firstname.lastname".)
  4. Press the tab key or click in the Password box.
  5. Enter your password - which is your My LIU password. (If you've never logged into My LIU, you should do so and change your password. Directions follow below.)
  6. Select the appropriate course title under the center column.

How do I log into My LIU?

  1. From Internet Explorer or any web browser, enter the following address to get to the LIU home page: http://www.liu.edu/
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the My LIU link.
  3. To activate your account, which is required the first time and one time only, click the Activate My Account link. Then, enter your information as directed.
  4. You will then be prompted to create a new password. This password should be at least 6 characters, and must contain 1 number or symbol.
  5. Once the password is set, click the link to return to http://my.liu.edu.
  6. Your account is now activated. Your username for My LIU and WebCT is in the format "firstname.lastname," and the password for both accounts is the same.
  7. Note: While your username is "firstname.lastname," your email address is "firstname.lastname@my.liu.edu." More My LIU information is available at http://studentcenter.liu.edu.

Pop-up Blocker Preventing You From Previewing Content?

If a pop-up blocker is activated, you may be prohibited from viewing some content your instructor has placed in the WebCT course. If this occurs, you can:

  1. Hold down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard while selecting the content. Continue to hold down the "Ctrl" key until you select the Open option, or...
  2. Disable the pop-up blocker that is embedded in your browser or tool bar. To disable your Google toolbar from blocking documents from WebCT, please review the instructions on the pdf file: Turn off pop up blocker only for WebCT

  3. If you have to install or reinstall a Java plug-in on your laptop, try following these directions:

    1. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Locate all versions of Sun Java, JRE, or JVM.
    4. For each version, click Change/Remove and follow the onscreen instructions.

    5. Download Java Plug-in.To install the Java Plug-In, accept the license agreement and follow the online and onscreen instructions.

After installing the Plug-In and rebooting your computer, do not download updates for the JRE. Disable automatic checking for Java updates:<
    6. From the Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel.
    7. Click the Update tab.
    8. Clear the checkbox next to Check for Updates Automatically.

    9. Click Apply.

    10. Click the "x" to close the Java Plug-in Control Panel window.
